Join our extended bike tour of Amsterdam treats and countryside retreats. Visit the oldest windmill in the city, plus a stop at a 400 year old working cheese farm. Yes, there are delicious cheese samples!
One of the best things about Amsterdam is it's easy to get out of the city on a bike. Just twenty minutes in the right direction and the city begins to slowly fade away. Try it and you'll find that the city is even more enjoyable after taking a break in the tranquil Dutch countryside.
We begin this ride with a leisurely pedal through the world famous Vondelpark. Then we are off through one of the outer neighborhoods to explore a floating house boat community. The houseboat community is protected from flooding by modern working sluice gates that border a giant freshwater lake. After passing over the freshwater lock system, we ride through Amsterdam's forest to see the exterior of a 364 year old windmill. We stop there for a short break and learn how the surrounding landscape was reclaimed using windmills. It's a very photogenic stop, and we will happily take photos of you in front of this picturesque windmill so bring a camera!
After the windmill, we're off to a 400 hundred year old working farm. There we discover the secrets of how Dutch cheese and clogs are made. Clogs (wooden shoes) were traditionally used by farmers to walk on the swampy reclaimed land and the farm we visit is one of the few farms left in the Netherlands that makes all of its clogs on site. Of course, there are delicious free cheese samples. If you like the cheeses, the farmer will gladly sell you some from his little store or you can even have your name carved into a pair of clogs!
After visiting the farm, we ride through classic Dutch landscape known as "polders" or reclaimed land. Some elevations are as low as four meters below sea level!
We return using a different route. Riding next to the gently flowing Amstel River and we re-enter the city through the lovely Queen Beatrix Park. We also pass by the funky neighborhood known as the "Pijp," eventually returning to our starting point near Museumplein.
This is always one of our most popular tours and regularly fills up, so book ahead. Feel free to bring a lunch you can eat on the go or a few snacks if you feel you may want more than just cheese.
Approximate distance is 20km or 12 miles. Terrain is mostly flat. Bikes have gears. There are several stops, but if you want a photo tour, please see our private tours.
