Who will be our bike tour guide?
Most likely, you will be on tour with one of the two owners, Sean or Allison. We are a married couple who both love Amsterdam, history, and riding bikes.
What about bringing our kids on a tour?
We welcome kids 10+ for our Country Tour. The Country Tour ride is 20 km (about 12 miles) so your child should be a confident long distance rider. We kindly ask that you please do not attempt to sneak kids that are younger than 10 years old onto this tour. We welcome kids 13+ for any Private Tour that rides through the city center. The city is very hectic and we ride beside cars without designated bike paths. Therefore we request that your child should not be a wobbly rider.
Can I store my luggage with Joy Ride?
Yes, we have a secure storage facility.
Will I be able to take photos?
Sure! We make several stops and we are also happy to take photos of you. However, you are part of a group so if you wish to take lots of photos -spending lots of time getting the perfect shot- then please consider taking a private Photo Tour. On a Private Tour you can stop whenever you like to photograph the Dutch landscape and city action.
What kind of bikes will we ride?
All of our bikes are under a year old! We have a fleet of Townie Electra bikes that have 7 speeds and hand brakes. They are super comfortable to ride and have adjustable seats.
What is the maximum size of the groups?
For the Country Tour, we take a maximum of 15 people. Joy Ride has the smallest group numbers out of all the bike companies in Amsterdam. We feel that smaller groups are safer, and allow for a more personalized tour experience. For Private Tours, we can take more people so please go to the Booking & Info page and send us your request.
What should we wear?
If you are not accustomed to the cold or wind, it is best to bring gloves, a scarf, and a hat. Better more than less! We have small side bags to carry these items. The weather can also change here instantly and is quite unpredictable. It is a good idea is to check the weather report on the day of your tour. Bicycle clothing is not necessary, but we do suggest wearing flat shoes and comfortable clothes. Sometimes the roads can be muddy or a little bike grease may be on the bike, so please do not bring expensive items on your bicycle tour (Hermes purses, 1,000 Euro Jackets, etc.) Our apologies, but we are unable to compensate you should some dirt from the roads in the countryside or grease attach itself to your personal items.
Should we bring anything on the tour?
We have bags on the side of our bikes for a small amount of personal items. The bags are not big enough for full sized backpacks, but they are large enough for things like gloves, scarves, hats or an extra jacket. If you are on the longer country tour, you are welcome to bring snacks or lunch that can be eaten on the go.
Do you rent or have bikes for sale?
We do not rent bikes, but we do sell used bikes (last year's fleet) for 200 Euros; complete with lock, seat, rain guards, and lights! The same bikes if purchased new sell for 500-700 Euros. Bikester Please send us an email or give us a call if you are interested in test riding one.
Do you have helmets?
Adults do not usually wear helmets in Amsterdam, but we have helmets (S, M, and L) and will be happy to provide them. Please let us know your helmet size in advance.
What if it rains?
It can rain up to 200 days a year in Amsterdam! Locals still ride in the rain and so do we. To insure your comfort, we provide complimentary rain gear on all of our tours. Sorry, but we do not offer refunds due to rain. You are welcome telephone us (during business hours please) and see if alternate tour dates are available if it rains on the day of your tour. Should we have spaces free we will gladly change the date of your tour. Otherwise we have request that all date cancellations or changes are done via email 72 hours in advance. We do not offer refunds for rain.
Do you have a follow vehicle if we get tired?
We do not have a follow vehicle for pick ups. We also ride to our destination. We do not drive our guests to the countryside. We are a 100% green company that uses the oldest renewable form of energy...foot power. This means we ride on streets and bike paths to get where we want to go!
Do you offer hotel pickups?
Being a one 100% green unfortunately means we do not have a car for hotel pickups. We kindly request that our guests meet us at our Meeting Point.
I am short/tall. Do you have a bike for me?
Yes. Just let us know your size and if our Electra’s do not fit you we can provide short people bikes and tall people bikes upon request. Please email us in advance!
Where is your meeting point and how do I get there?
To get to our Meeting Point from the Central train station or Dam Square, I would suggest taking a cab. It should cost around 10 Euros. Alternatively, you can take tram number 5 from the Central Train Station to the Rijk’s Museum, or trams 1 or 2 to Leidseplein. Walking from Dam Square takes about 15-20 minutes.
